At the time this photo was taken in 1971, the station was still operational, but with limited hours and capabilities. This is not the original station which had been built near the Bank and closer to the Paper Mill. These photos were taken because Mr. Douglas knew the station was slated to be demolished in the near future. It was torn down in the 1980s.
This station had a service to Lynchburg from Big Island everyday. Waugh had a post office where they'd hang the mailbag and the train would pick it up as it went by.
